DESCRIPTION
Cornhole Everywhere has been a project that has had a longer life than most of my projects. It’s a mobile AR game I started back in 2017 when ARCore and ARKit came out. I was learning about the platforms and how they worked after I got to touch ARCore first at a MIT Hackathon. After that event I started learning more about AR and what was possible. Cornhole Everywhere was started in the following weeks.
The game works very simply as based on the title, you can play cornhole everywhere using augmented reality. The player scans for a floor then places the cornhole board and by swiping forward can throw beanbags.
The first iteration of the game actually had the official rules of cornhole in there and had the unique way of throwing the beanbags by flipping the phone which programmatically imitated the throwing of the bags. In testing though, I was worried about people dropping their phone so that was taken out and swiping forward was added.
There are lots of possibilities for the game but I paused development to work on other projects. I believe what I gained from developing it was a understanding of AR mobile development and how SLAM can be used to expand on a game.
